Loving others as God loves us
This year we are celebrating Christmas with a marked difference. Every community in the Circuit is in Tier 3 and social mixing – in our case worship gathering – is restricted, with no immediate end in view. Meanwhile, we thank God for covid-19 vaccines. This means, many families will be on their own this Christmas. We will deeply miss each other.
Even so, there is one thing that will not change, the essential meaning of Christmas. For us Christians, this is Jesus. He is our 'Immanuel', that is, God is with us (Matthew 1. 23). For this reason, Christmas for us will be incredibly special this year in that Jesus will fill in the hole that social distancing creates. His presence will link us up more efficiently than Zoom would, bring us more closely than Facetime would, represent us more ably than cards would, enthuse family gatherings more purposefully than parties would, and give peace to the broken-hearted. Wherever we will not be, the child Jesus, Lord of the resurrection, will!
We appreciate even more dearly that Jesus, God-Made-Flesh, is our go-between Presence in our two-metre distance regulation, our Immanuel who demonstrates how God loves us. May the Presence of Christ bring you joy this Christmas!
